Four Golden Rules
for Parents and Teachers to MOTIVATE Students
by Herman Ohme, Ed.D.
Rule #1 - EVERY CHILD CAN LEARN
Parents and Teachers who truly believe that every student
CAN learn have one great common bond: they absolutely refuse
to give up or believe anyone who tries to convince them they are in a
losing battle. They redouble their efforts; they become
problem-solvers; they find what works.
Rule #2 - EXPECTATION GOVERNS PERFORMANCE
Parents and Teachers tend to get what they expect. If they
believe a child is incapable or below average, the child inevitably
will find ways to prove they are right. Parents and Teachers with the
opposite attitude work to find ways that enable the child to prove
that they are also right.
Rule #3 - STUDENTS PERFORM BEST FOR TEACHERS THEY LIKE
A Report Card with mostly C's, D's, and F's, and an isolated A or
a B is a clear indication of a teacher the student liked. Teachers
who truly respect and like all of their students find ways to
encourage them that have wonderful effects on their performance.
Rule #4 - REVENGE IS THE WRONG MEDICINE
Parents and Teachers cannot afford the luxury of carrying a
grudge. Revenge and punishment mean getting into a war that no one
can win. As Adults, Parents and Teachers can refuse to play
"hostility" games. It is best to use constructive means to correct
unacceptable behavior, but at all times retain respect for the
individual.
